Care Guide
Copper and bronze (which is an alloy of copper and tin) are natural materials with unique properties that make them ideal for crafting beautiful jewelry. However, due to their chemical composition, they may react with the natural acidity and moisture of your skin, causing a harmless green or bluish-green discoloration known as "verdigris". This phenomenon is common and temporary, and it does not indicate any health risks or allergic reactions.
To minimize the chances of this discoloration, we suggest a few simple solutions:
1) Keep your jewelry clean: Regularly cleaning your copper and bronze jewelry with a polishing pad or soft cloth and mild soap will help remove any residue that may accelerate the oxidation process. To remove heavier tarnish, you can use a mix of baking soda, lemon juice and water. Scrub mixture on with a soft cloth or toothbrush and wipe off. Always dry your jewelry completely after cleaning.
2) Limit exposure to moisture: Remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, or engaging in activities that cause you to sweat excessively. This will help reduce the potential for discoloration.
3) Apply a thin layer of clear nail polish or jewelry sealant: Coating the inner surface of your copper or bronze jewelry with a protective layer can prevent direct contact with your skin, reducing the likelihood of discoloration.
4) Adjust your skin's pH balance: Some individuals have a more acidic skin pH, which can increase the chances of verdigris. If you experience frequent discoloration, consider using a gentle, pH-balanced soap or moisturizer to help neutralize your skin's acidity.
To store your jewelry, wrap each piece in soft fabric and store in an airtight bag. Try to store each piece separately so that different materials don’t scratch one another.
